A Functional Approach to Whole Body Training

While free weights and machines are beneficial in strength training, they often target muscles rather than movement. Also, since machines move in a pre-determined pattern the ability to increase proprioception is lessened. Many fitness enthusiasts are disadvantaged on machines due to height and lever length. Bodyweight training eliminates these issues, as well as increases overall proprioception.

How many people are limited by their ability to move their own body weight, especially pull-ups? If your body weight is what you carry around all day, whether in sport or in everyday active living, what could be a more functional method of training than to use your own self as resistance to get better at moving “you”?

Functional training is typically defined as exercises that have a purpose or direct intention that relates to movements that a person will encounter in life. Humans move in a variety of ways and mainly with multi-joint actions, thus functional training focuses on multi-joint exercises that mimic daily movements while improving the person’s overall fitness components. In simple terms, functional training prepares people to move.
